USA Trip – Day 21 : Snorkeling in St Thomas

IMG_1421.jpg

This morning we were up and had breakfast before our arrival in St. Thomas at 11am. We sat out on the deck and enjoyed tea/coffee coming into the port.

IMG_0725.jpg

St. Thomas is one of my fav. places so I was very happy to be back.

IMG_0744.jpg

IMG_0746.jpg

When we were cleared to leave the boat we had to hunt down a “taxi” which we did, then had to wait while the driver filled up the mini van before we were on our way. The drivers here are quite mad and road rules don’t seem to apply. Finally we arrived at the American Yacht Harbour and met with Captain Wilson and his boat Deju Blue. We were quite late which I felt rather bad about.

G0021961.jpg

The boat takes 6 people but since it was only the 4 of us we had lots of room.

We all love being on the water so it was such a fun day – with Caribbean music playing and the salt air in our hair.

G0031966.jpg

Our first stop was to get lunch (which had been ordered via phone) from the pizza boat – yep, you read that right.

G0062015.jpg

G0062018.jpg

The pizza was huge – lucky we only got one to share – but was really delicious.

IMG_8215.jpg

Then it was on to our first snorkel stop.

IMG_2866.jpg

2016_1214_141723_004.jpg

G0082043.jpg

The water was SO clear and such a lovely temperature. And there were so many fish of all sizes and colour (I’m sure we have more photos of them but I haven’t downloaded them yet).

G0082056.jpg

These baby yellow fish hadn’t yet left their hatching area.

G0092123.jpg

Below is a Christmas tree worm (good to snorkel with a scuba diver (ie Kevin) who knows what so many things are).

G0092132.jpg

Kevin went up on top of the boat (there are two seats) to get this photo.

G0112209.jpg

Onto our second stop.

G0122231.jpg

Which was more challenging with choppier water (Captain Wilson checked we were up for it).

G0132272.jpg

Again so many fish and stunning corals. Again better photos were taken.

G0142347.jpg

Then our last stop (at the island of St John) was to see some green sea turtles.

G0212604.jpg

Luckily Captain Wilson spotted one for us right away and we were able to follow “George”, as we named him, around (with his two friends) as he fed and then came up for air.

G0212612.jpg

G0212621.jpg

This day was definitely one of the highlights of both the cruise and the trip overall and it’s one we’ll remember forever. It was the best snorkeling I can ever recall doing and in one of the most beautiful places in the world. I’d love to come here one day and spend a whole week exploring.

IMG_0757.jpg

IMG_8224.jpg

IMG_8227.jpg

The sun was starting to set as we finished our 4 hour trip and headed back to the marina.

G0242671.jpg

The awesome Captain Wilson had also organised for a taxi to come and pick us up and take us back the ship.

IMG_0758.jpg

It was so strange arriving back at night. We had a quick look at the stalls and Christy bought a dress she had been eyeing in the morning.

IMG_0765.jpg

Back in our cabin we had some treats waiting for us (for being in Diamond Club)

IMG_0767.jpg

We were too late arriving back to have dinner in the dining room so instead we showered and changed and went to Sabers (Mexican). Unfortunately there were very little vegetarian options so we left and went to Windjammers.

IMG_0769.jpg

After dinner we went to watch the diving show and had gotten seats on one of the less known decks. Unfortunately though it was cancelled due to it being a little rocky (not that we had noticed).

So it was back to our cabin for another early night. Not that I minded terribly :-).

USA Trip – Day 20 – Sea day

DSC00648.jpg

A sea day always means not a lot of photos and much to blog about. But it also means a nice day of relaxation.

IMG_8094.jpg

Kevin was kind enough to go and get me a cup of tea, which I enjoyed with some biscuits.

IMG_8107.jpg

We headed up to breakfast in Windjammers about 8am (minus Christy who was still asleep). I hardly ever eat eggs these days and these were cold so remained uneaten (sadly). I did enjoy the fried rice and potatoes.

IMG_0707.jpg

I was also very excited to see they had the chocolate donuts I had always loved so much. I forgot that they had changed the recipe and I no longer really like them. I had a few bites and left the rest.

IMG_8111.jpg

After breakfast we went to explore the boardwalk. On the way we admired some the art works (for sale in the auction) featuring golden retrievers.

IMG_1411.jpg

IMG_8120.jpg

IMG_8122.jpg

IMG_8126.jpg

Just after I said this was a great  area for kids I noticed Kevin was already playing on it :-).

IMG_8135.jpg   IMG_8139.jpg

Such a cute, fun area that you’d definitely not expect to find on a ship.

IMG_8141.jpg

Kevin wasn’t the best this morning and Christy wasn’t hungry so just Athena and I went to lunch at the American Icon Grill – which is just liking the dining room on other RCL ships.

IMG_8149.jpg

IMG_8152.jpg

Here you can order from the menu or get stuff from a small buffet, which includes a salad bar.

IMG_8161.jpg

We chose to do a bit of each.

IMG_0710.jpg

Having no idea how big the menu lunches were !!! Obviously I had to leave a lot of food. I had also (mistakeningly) ordered key lime pie for dessert. It was nice but too sweet so I only had a few bites.

IMG_0711.jpg

Love this piece of art that was near our table.

IMG_8166.jpg

After lunch we went back to the room, then Christy and I went to the solarium pool for a swim. Such a fun pool – very small, but little fountains and shower and the water the perfect temperature. We were in for quite a while before we got out and laid on a sun lounge while I dried off.

DSC00598.jpg

It was a funny afternoon with rain showers/clouds passing over and then the sun coming back out. I sat out on our balcony reading for a while when I got back.

IMG_0717.jpg

We went to the dining room again for dinner and I was again disappointed in the vegetarian options. At lunch today there had been two veggie options for the main dish. Tonight at dinner there was only fruit salad for the starter, and one dish for the main. It didn’t appeal at all so I just got mashed potatoes, a baked potato and some veggies.

IMG_0719.jpg

We were supposed to see the ice skating show tonight but were too tired to stay up for it. Christy went and said it was very good.

I was trying to work out why I’m struggling more with tiredness on this cruise and then realized this is the first one since I’ve been on cymbalta – which has really caused a lot of sleep disturbances. On other cruises I would sleep through every night but now that only happens every couple of nights :-(.

USA Trip – Day 19 : First time in the Bahamas

DSC00604.jpg

A bit of a gloomy start to the day but I’m sure the clouds (and misty rain) will all blow away.

For breakfast we headed to the Solarium. It was a great choice. It was nice and quiet, easy to get a table, and the food selections better than I had expected.

IMG_7923.jpg

By 9am we had docked in Nassau, Bahamas. We had a bit of drama here as Athena’s scooter had been moved during the night (from outside their room) and we hadn’t been able to get it returned yet. When we were about the leave the boat we realized how big a walk Athena would have – and wouldn’t be able to make due to pain. We spotted a wheelchair and asked if we could use that to get the exit. We were told yes and someone wheeled Athena off the ship, only to be told at the bottom of the gangway that it couldn’t be taken any further. So it was back on the ship and Kevin (who had just returned from fetching the kids passports) had to go in search of the scooter so we could take that with us. Ended up being the best thing as Athena would have had to miss out on things without it.

IMG_1339.jpg

Finally at 9.30am we were in Nassau and met with our tour guide, Nick from Cheryl’s Bahama Taxi & Tours, and we were on our way (once Kevin and Nick managed to get the scooter in the vechicle).

IMG_7933.jpg

DSC00609.jpg

DSC00613.jpg

Our first stop was the Ardastra Zoo.

IMG_7937.jpg

Where we saw lots of cute birds and animals…

IMG_1349.jpg

IMG_7947.jpg

IMG_7953.jpg

and lots of lovely plants and flowers…

IMG_0679.jpg

This amazing flower is growing out the truck of another tree.

IMG_0688.jpgIMG_0689.jpg

But the main star of the show (and the reason we were here) was to see the flamingo show.

The flamingos have been trained to march and it was so fun watching them parade around the arena (in which we were the only viewers). I don’t know why but I thought flamingos were a lot bigger than they are.

IMG_7967.jpg

Such beautiful birds. Anyone who knows me knows I have been a big flamingo lover for years.

IMG_1365.jpg

IMG_0678.jpg

IMG_1367.jpg

We were even allowed to go into the arena and be a part of the flock.

IMG_1375.jpg

After the show the birds are free to wander around the zoo so we had to visit some more with my favourite bird.

IMG_7985.jpg

And, of course, I had to take a selfie :-).

IMG_1383.jpg

IMG_0681.jpg

We all loved the visit here. Not sure if you noticed I was wearing my flamingo top in honor of the occasion. And I got the cutest soft flamingo to remember my time with the flamingos.

IMG_7993.jpg

Our next stop was the Pirate Museum.

IMG_7994.jpg

I already knew not to expect a lot here (due to mixed reviews) but Athena and Christy really enjoyed the visit.

IMG_7999.jpg

IMG_8006.jpg

Time to buy some local chocolates. I think these might have to be the most beautiful chocolates I’ve ever seen.

IMG_8039.jpg

And the wall and steps outside were handcarved by slaves in the 1600s.

IMG_8043.jpg

Photo opp with a pirate.

IMG_8046.jpg

And a local policeman guiding traffic.

DSC00617.jpg

We then drove over to see the Atlantis resort. Looks amazing. Hope I get to see inside (or maybe even stay there) one day.

DSC00623.jpg

DSC00627.jpg

This poor tree was knocked over in the recent hurricane.

DSC00636.jpg

We stopped for lunch at these little shacks.

DSC00637.jpg

Run by locals who have gone and caught conch and fish that morning.

IMG_8055.jpg

IMG_8054.jpg

I requested a vegetarian meal. When this salad came I thought that was it. It was a little spicy for me but I managed to eat about half and was satisfied.

IMG_0691.jpg

Then they bought out this. The rice was amazing (I’d already eaten some of Athenas and still ate all this) and the plantain really yummy. Great to try some local foods.

IMG_8061.jpg

Kevin and Athena shared fish and conch.

IMG_8059.jpg

And then ordered a bowl of plantain after trying (and loving) mine.

IMG_0692.jpg

If you’re wondering about Christy, she had two packets of crisps, as there was nothing on the menu she would eat (though she did try the plantain).

There was some more sightseeing on the way back to the ship. And Athena decided to get their hair braided by Peggy (who had talked to us upon our arrival). Not the best photo to show it off but it really suits them.

IMG_0693.jpg

We were running almost late by this time so I snapped a quick photo to show the size of Oasis of the Seas and then Christy and I were offered a ride back to the ship (which was very nice even though the guy was grumpy with so many people running “late”).

IMG_1406.jpg

But we were back on board by the time of 2.30pm and got to enjoy sailaway at 3pm.

IMG_8080.jpg

Looking down into Central park.

IMG_1407.jpg

Tonight was formal night. We didn’t bring any “formal” clothes but still made an effort to get a little dressed up.

IMG_8082.jpg

IMG_8083.jpg

IMG_8086.jpg

Tonight I had corn fritters…

IMG_0703.jpg

and mashed potatoes and veggies (as the one vegetarian option wasn’t very appealing).

IMG_0704.jpg

We were too tired to stay up for tonights show (unfortunately i booked all late shows when in fact we were finished with dinner in time for the early show), so it was back to our cabin and off to bed.

USA Trip : Day 18 – Onboard Oasis of the Seas

IMG_7820.jpg

I woke up just as the sun was coming up and went outside to vlog. Unfortunately I didn’t whisper and the kids and Kevin were woken up by my talking.

IMG_7828.jpg

I love getting to see the start of the day. In the olden days (pre fibro) I would have headed down to the beach. But at least I could see and enjoy it from our room.

DSC00572.jpg

DSC00577.jpg

Around 9am we all got ready and headed to the hotels breakfast (which is included in the rate). I had a bagel and potatoes.

IMG_0636.jpg

And Kevin was excited to do the make your own waffles – which he loved doing the last time we stayed here.

IMG_0638.jpg

We then headed back to the room where I had some time watching YouTube – was nice to catch up on some videos as I’ve really missed “my friends”.

Then at 11am we checked out of the hotel and drove the short distance to Port Canaveral.

DSC00585.jpg

First glimpse of the ship – it is HUGE – 220,000 tonne – it was the largest cruise ship in the world, until it’s sister ship took the title by being slightly bigger.

DSC00586.jpg

We unloaded our luggage from the car (except for the 2 suitcases packed full of souveniers. There was already quite the crowd to board the ship and it took a bit of time to get through security and then check-in. So lucky we had the scooter for Athena.

Finally it was photo time and then onboard Oasis of the Seas. And boy what a ship she is. Photos really don’t capture it all so be sure to watch the videos when they are eventually posted.

First up was a LONG wait at guest services to get additional cards for the rooms so we can all get into both cabins. By the time we were done it was 1pm and were just heading to our cabins when they were available.

The kids cabin – they did get the bed separated into two as Athena is such a messy sleeper.

IMG_7857.jpg

IMG_7859.jpg

And our cabin. I was pleasantly surprised with it as I heard lots about how small it was (and we were coming off two cruises in Junior suites) but I felt it was well set up, with lots of storage, and totally comfortable for 2 people.

IMG_7862.jpg

We also have a decent size balcony as we are on the hump (I had chosen this room for that reason) but miss having a sun lounge and a rear facing cabin (all of them on this ship are suites).

IMG_7865.jpg

The bathroom was a lovely surprise – nice and roomy and a much better set up than we’ve had before. Love that it has a night light.

IMG_7868.jpg

We even had some cookies waiting (there were 6) because we are now Diamond Club members.

IMG_7866.jpg

After getting a settled we set off to Windjammers for lunch as we were pretty hungry by now. I started with a very yummy potato and leek soup.

IMG_7874.jpg

Then had a salad, mashed potatoes and corn cob.

IMG_7877.jpg

We then had a little explore around the ship.

IMG_1323.jpg

IMG_7885.jpg

IMG_0644.jpg

And Kevin and Christy did the zipline. Christy enjoyed it and did it twice. Kevin didn’t think it was worth the hassle of getting in and out of the gear (but then he did a great zipline tour in Alaska).

IMG_0642.jpg

DSC00591.jpg

Love how the main pool has a beach like area with “sand” and umbrellas.

DSC00595.jpg

The solarium pool has some really comfy sunlounge and couches looking forward.

DSC00598.jpg

DSC00600.jpg

The beautiful Christmas tree on the Promenade.

IMG_7895.jpg

At 4pm we had muster (luckily inside – but I missed out on a seat). Then shortly after it was sailaway. Athena and I had such a difficult time getting a lift after muster (because of the scooter) so missed out on getting our traditional sailaway virgin pina coladas :-(.

IMG_0652.jpg

We chose to stay on our veranda (though the kids didn’t hang around too long).

IMG_0659.jpg

IMG_0661.jpg

IMG_0663.jpg

I got comfy as said farewell to Orlando (for the next week).

IMG_0665.jpg

DSC00601.jpg

We had managed to get early seating for dinner – which was at 5.30pm in the Silk dining room.

IMG_7902.jpg

I have to say the selections have been reduced and I’m now only left with one vegetarian entree and one vegetarian main (for my US friends that is one vegetarian appetizer and one vegetarian entree). So tonight I had mushroom soup – which was delicious.

IMG_0669.jpg

And a polenta cake – which was alright – but not really what I was feeling like.

IMG_0671.jpg

After dinner we went for a stroll in Central Park (yes, here on the ship with real plants) only to find it had been raining. Then it was back to our cabin where I stayed on hold for ages trying to track down a missing bag (the one with our snacks/chocolates leftover from Bonnet Creek that we didn’t want to leave to melt in the car). We went down to Guest Services  to look for it but couldn’t find it. We’ll follow up again tomorrow.

IMG_1337.jpg

Kevin and I were pretty tired so opted for an early night while the kids headed off to the teen area.
