UK – Day 3 – Tower of London

IMG_1003

Finally we were greeted with blue skies and sunshine. Today was just what you’d expect for a British Summer day. We woke early again and played on our computers until it was time to get up, get dressed and go down to breakfast. It’s certainly hard trying to keep everyone (well, the kids) quiet until we’re all awake but hopefully they’ll get the hang of it soon – afterall we’re going to be living in the one room for the next 6 weeks!

This morning I chose to have a fried egg on toast…with tea, of course.

IMG_0976

We had a chat with the owner Sabiya this morning and Christy played with her gorgeous little boy, before we set off for South Gate and the tube to London.

IMG_0069

As expected on a work day it was somewhat busier than on the weekend but being towards the end of the line we were able to get a seat on the way in. We changed at Kings Cross and went on to Tower Hill (so much easier than yesterdays attempt).

IMG_0979

It was just amazing. Kevin and I have been before, back in 1997, but couldn’t really remember much of it. It is awesome. So full of history. It is recommended to allow 3 hours here. We spent 5 and still missed doing the Yeoman tour. We did all 5 audio tours.

IMG_1029

IMG_1043

I was glad we got there just after opening as it got busier as the day went one – which is why we never got around to the yeoman tour. Once again we had an early lunch.

IMG_1015

IMG_1016

They even had a cute little section “just for kids”

IMG_1017

IMG_1019

I actually chose a cheese roll from the kids section …. so I could fit it one of the very cute cupcakes :-). And I loved that the tea was fair trade. I’ve been so impressed with the healthy food and organic choices  in London.

IMG_1022

After lunch we continued with the audio tour. Christy bought herself a new favourite toy – which she proceeded to play with all afternoon.

IMG_1037

Later went to watch a weapons show. One of the actors was amazed to find a young girl reading this book….

IMG_1047

She doesn’t get it from me. I wouldn’t even go into the exhibit on torture and punishment :-).

IMG_1038

IMG_1050

Lastly we visited the white tower.

IMG_1009

IMG_1063

Since it was late in the day it was rather busy but we still managed to see all the amour. Christy was most interested in the childrens and horses armour.

IMG_1057

Though in typical child fashion she pointed it that this suit of Henry VIII was indeed that of a adult boy :-).

IMG_0084

One the way out we were lucky enough to catch one of the guard ceremonies.

IMG_1067

and have a photo with one of the yeoman warders.

IMG_0085

It was now 3pm and we were tired and suffering with sore feet again but we solidered on and caught the tube to Barbican station and walked to the Museum of London. After dropping our bags off (with a great deal of relief) we went in search of food and a rest for our feet. I was SOOO impressed to find this. And somewhat surprised that both Kevin and myself chose to have this for afternoon tea (instead of cake, which would have been the case a year or two ago). It was delicious and the perfect way to refuel.

IMG_0091

IMG_0092

We then set of to explore…on our own…without a tour or guide…which we prefer not to do. The girls loved this saxon house and Christy played happily for around 15mins… until she got a splinter.

IMG_0101

IMG_0098

IMG_0099

There was enough of interest to have made the trip worthwhile and quite a lot of interactive stuff for the girls to play with.

IMG_0104

IMG_0105

At 5.30pm our feet were about to give out on us so we headed back to the tube for the ride home. It was crowded and we didn’t manage to get a seat until right towards the end. Like last night we had dinner in South Gate. Tonight we chose Pizza Express (which is a lot more elegant than it sounds).

IMG_0118

Tonight the natives played horses & knights.

IMG_0122

Kevin and I chose a pizza with the middle dough part missing and replaced by salad – genius I say – and the perfect amount for Kevin & I to share. Best of all – it was SOOO yummy!

IMG_0125

Amy had the kids meal which was dough balls (dipped in garlic butter) and pizza.

IMG_0124

IMG_0128

Christy chose garlic bread – which wasn’t what she expected but she enjoyed all the same.

IMG_0127

We then trudged back to the B&B and collapsed onto our beds. Tomorrows plan is the Science Museum, Harrods and maybe Buckingham Palace.

UK – Day 2 – Museums and Markets

IMG_0959

We were all awake by 4.30am – which meant we all got a good nights sleep. We lazed in bed – the girls writing up their diaries and me writing yesterdays blog post. Eventually we got up, got dressed and headed down to breakfast, where we watched the kitties play while Sabiya cooked our breakfast.

IMG_0824

IMG_0828

Today Kevin and I shared a mushroom, tomato and spring onion omelette. It was DELICIOUS!

IMG_0830

Then it was time to don our jackets and head outdoors. It was VERY cold and we quickly realized we needed another layer (and some socks) for Christy. Who would think it’s mid Summer?

IMG_0043

We caught the bus again…

IMG_0045

Then the tube, only to discover the circle line was out of operation. We found out how to get to the next station to the Tower of London but realized we’d lost a good hour and a half of the day. Instead we decided to go to the British Museum. We finally got their around 11am.

IMG_0838

By the time we got in, dropped our jackets and bags in the kids area, and decided what we wanted to do, it was 11.30am and I thought an early lunch before starting out might be a good idea. I chose a leek and potato soup but it wasn’t that good – too many leaks I think – so I just at the baguette it came with – and half of Christy’s cookie.

IMG_0841

Then it was time to start our audio tour. We went with the kids tour guides that had the option of listen to the adult commentary. It worked really well. Both the girls thoroughly enjoyed it (as did Kevin and I). We did 3 of the tours – Ancient Egypt, Early Britain and Ancient Greece.

IMG_0870

Here’s a collage of some of what we saw.

British Museum

Highlights would be the Rosetta Stone…

IMG_0050

IMG_0918

and the Parthenon Freeze.

IMG_0061

Christy loved this little hippo that we saw in the souvenier shop. Of course, we’d missed it on the tour so had to go back in search of it. She was a bit surprised it was so small. I was amazed it was over 4000 years old.

IMG_0936

Kevin made us have a photo with this bronze statue. Apparently it’s famous and we have a documentary about it at home. Christy was quick to point at this it is, in fact, a boy!

IMG_0066

Finally, with VERY sore feet, it was time to leave the museum and had to the markets – Covent Garden Markets that is. It was probably around a 15min walk.

IMG_0949

IMG_0954

The girls loved the street performers.

IMG_0944

IMG_0947

IMG_0948

I loved finding a Whittards store. I was very restrained and only bought a few things.

IMG_0953

Just look what I had to tempt me.

IMG_0952

We bought an ice-cream from Thorntons – Kevin & I had raspberry and cream and boy was it yummy. We sat in the sunshine to enjoy it.

IMG_0956

We then spent around half and hour relaxing and enjoying this street performer, who ended his rather funny routine with a tightrope walk.

IMG_0963

We then explored the market section. I got myself a lovely handmade wooden vase and flowers, and Amy bought herself this very cute hat.

IMG_0968

Then it was time to catch the tube and bus back to Southgate where we had dinner.

IMG_0971

The natives were acting a little strange.

IMG_0972

IMG_0973

I order the vegetables with rice. Totally delicious. You just can’t order a meal like this in Australia.

IMG_0975

We then walked back to the B&B and relaxed for a bit before going to sleep. Tomorrow we hope to make it to the Tower of London.

And you’ll be happy to know today Christy spotted not one, but two Goldies.

IMG_0942

Uk – Day 1 – London Town

_DSC3705

We arrived at the Wynchgate B&B well ahead of the expected time of 9.30am. In fact, it was only 7.30am. Luckily for us our gracious hosts, Sabiya and Mark welcomed us. We were shown to our room which is gorgeous. It would perfect for 2 people but for us the couch gets made into the bed for the kids. Still it is much better than I’d hoped. Lots of storage space for us to unpack and place our luggage.

IMG_0777

Nice little welcoming touches.

IMG_0778

Best of all they quickly whipped us up some breakfast – which we totally weren’t expecting but was oh, so, appreciated – esp. the cup of tea!  The kitchen room looks into the conservatory which has been taken over by the owners rescue kitties – it was fun to watch them while we ate (I’ll be sure to take some photos later).

We then went up to our room to unpack, shower and change. I got a fright while in the shower when I discovered my left legs was all swollen with fluid. I freaked out because of having had a previous DVT (blood clot). I travelled on blood thinners and was up and down a lot on the plane but I didn’t wear a compression stocking on this leg (I always wear one on the blood clot leg). UPDATE – after a nights sleep wearing the stocking my leg is back to normal – thank goodness).

Then it was time to set off for our first day in London. We realized immediately that we weren’t dressed warmly enough but being only 9am we hoped the day would warm up.

IMG_0779

We had a 10min walk to the tube station.

IMG_0780

Luckily I knew in advance the tube wasn’t running the first few stops so we caught a bus to Wood Green. It took us a while to get tickets organised. Oyster (weekly) cards for Kevin and myself. Amy is just 2GBP a day and Christy is FREE!! We then headed down into the station where we quickly learned to etiquete of staying to the right so people can pass on the escalator :-).

IMG_0782

Christy wanted to stand up and loved they should not hold on (something she’s not allowed to do on buses).

IMG_0784

Upon arrival in Piccadilly Circus we had to hunt down a jacket for Kevin (when I packed I realized he didn’t have a comfy jacket – only a wind and padded jacket). We got him one at the Gap then set off to find the RIGHT bus. I already bought tickets for the Orignal London Bus tour as we really wanted a live guide.

IMG_0793

IMG_0788

_DSC3721

It was a great tour. So wonderful seeing all the sights. Loved all the old buildings. Have never seen so many double storey buses in all my life. But BOY was it COLD!!!!

Trafalga Square…

IMG_0818

IMG_0798

Tower Bridge

IMG_0803

Lots of beautiful flowers everywhere.

_DSC3757

We had planned to get off at Buckingham Palace (mainly to see the gates since my grandfather once painted them and Christy loves that story) but it was cold and VERY busy since it was just after the changing of the guards. Glad we decided not to leave the bus as we wouldn’t have gotten anywhere near the gates anyway. Maybe another day.

_DSC3764

I knew London would be busy but I was unprepared for how busy it would be. I don’t like crowds 🙁 and we misplaced Christy twice when she kept walking when we’d stopped – we’re just not used to losing sight of the kids in crowds. We decided to get off at the London Eye but first went in search of food as we were all hungry. We decided on this Chinese resturant (not what I thought our first meal in London would be). I couldn’t understand why the place was empty until we realized it wasn’t even 12pm yet. The food was as expected and warm (which was the main thing).

IMG_0790

IMG_0791

IMG_0789

When we went back outside it was even colder and the line for the London Eye very long. The kids were getting cold and cranky. I was cold and tired. So we decided not to wait an hour or so in the cold and headed back for the bus. Hopefully we’ll make it again.

_DSC3787

We spotted our first golden :-).

_DSC3788

Back on the bus (sitting inside this time) we set off again. Amy then realized she had left her bag at lunch so we continued around and got off again near the London Eye. Christy had fallen asleep so we had to wake her.

IMG_0810

Luckily her bag was there – complete with her money. Back on the bus we went to get our internet/phone things sorted out. That was quick and painless but we were all tired and grumpy by now and it was time to start the journey home. But first we had to find the right tube station. That accomplished we boarded the very crowded tube and when we got seats Amy promptly fell asleep. Then it was time for the bus ride (luckily the tube will be back to normal on Monday). Back in South gate we went to the local Tesco and picked up some supplies for dinner and snacks. We then got into our jammies. Kevin worked on getting the internet set up. I started writing up the blog for yesterday. The girls were asleep by 6pm, Kevin not long after, and I managed to last until 7pm.

UK – The journey

IMG_0714

We were all packed and ready to go when the car we’d hired to take us to the airport arrived just before 11am. I couldn’t believe it that the driver was from Scotland! We arrived in the airport in good time – around 12.3opm and went to check in for our Singapore Airlines Flight. Mum and Dad arrived while we were there and went to had lunch with them once checked in our bags.

IMG_0718

Love this photo of my Dad and Christy – can’t believe the next time we see him will be in Scotland.

IMG_0721

All to quickly it was time to head through security, exchange some currency (which as you can see the girls were very excited about),

IMG_0726 IMG_0727

buy some supplies for the trip and then hop on the plane.

IMG_0734

The 7.5 hour flight to Singapore was uneventful. We were served dinner – rather early I thought as it was only 4.3opm!

IMG_0746

Christy was SOOOO excited to get a power puff activity pack as she is obsessed with the power puff girls and watches them every night.

IMG_0735

Kevin enjoyed a Singapore Sling.

IMG_0747

I watched a couple of movies and before we knew it we were in Singapore. The airport here is amazing. The nicest I have ever been too.

IMG_0748

They even had some activity stations for the kids.

IMG_0750

And some very large koi fish.

IMG_0751

After stopping for a bite to eat (even though it was after midnight in Australia) and a wonder around we discovered a Butterfly room of all things. As always it was hot in there – then we realized it was open to the fresh air. So midnight in Singapore is still VERY humid.

IMG_0754

IMG_0755

Finally it was time to board the next plane – this time we were on an A380. We were rather tired by now and I’m pretty sure we were all asleep before we left the ground. I think we all managed around 6 hours sleep which we felt was not too bad. When we woke up I watched The Tooth Fairy – which I really enjoyed. Here’s a photo of Christy and I towards the end of the second 13 hour flight.

IMG_0760

Though the trip went very well and both girls were well behaved (probably helped by the fact they didn’t sit next to one another), we were very happy to land in London and get off the plane. Immigration was amazingly smooth and quick and friendly (compared to LAX). We then collected our bags and met our driver, Darren, who drove us to the B&B were we are staying for the next 5 nights.
