Arriving in Fiji

It was aΒ  very early wake up this morning and it was lucky we had the alarm set for 4am as we were both fast asleep when it went off. After a quick cuddle with the pups we dragged ourselves out of bed to get dressed and do a final pack. We put the dogs outside ready for the puppy sitter who would be arriving later in the morning and just on 5am are limo arrived and we were on our way. It was still dark when we left so we were able to enjoy the sunrise as we arrived in Sydney.

IMG_6978.JPG

With 6 of us in the limo is was surprisingly not very comfy but we managed. Mum, who is a nervous flyer (and hasn’t flown in over 10 years) was relaxing.

IMG_6979.JPG In the limo

We arrived at Sydney airport… and yes I agree a limo with a trailer is not quite so glamorous πŸ™‚

IMG_6982.JPG

got checked in for our flight…

IMG_6984.JPG

and went through immigration and security with little wait. Christy was sad to have missed Santa in the duty free shop but we did see him wondering around later (and only had photos taken with yesterday!).

IMG_6985.JPG

She did, however, get to make friends with the Milka cow and ring his bell.

After a bit of shopping – Opi nailpolish and Locataine – we found a Gloria Jeans and got some breakfast.

Just arrived at the Outrigger, Fiji

An egg sandwich and iced chocolate for me.

Then just after 8am it was time to board our flight.

IMG_6992.JPG

It was uneventful flight, which Mum coped with amazingly well. I used my i-pad to get caught up with Google Reader.

IMG_7000.JPG

And I had to laugh when I saw what happened to my chip packet :-).

IMG_7002.JPG

Roughly 3 and 3/4 hours later we were flying over Fiji…

IMG_7005.JPG IMG_7012.JPG

Suddenly we weren’t complaining of being cold anymore!!! After clearing immigration and collecting our luggage we meet up with our transfer company, where we received a lei greeting.

Lei welcome

After a short, but seemingly long wait, our mini bus departed for the 1.5 hour trip to our resort. I really loved seeing the lush landscape, the clouds rolling in, the cows beside the road, the roadside fruit stalls, the lines full of drying clothes outside each home,

IMG_7019.JPG

the homes of the locals – both wealthy and poor,

IMG_7029.JPG

and the vehicles FULL of pineapples!!!

IMG_7024.JPG

Christy (and Amy) both nodded off…

IMG_7025.jpg

but Kevin and I really enjoyed the passing view…

IMG_7027.JPG

Then finally we were arriving at our resort and hearing “Bulla” yelled at us in greeting as we drove through the entrance.

At reception we were greeted with refreshing cold towelettes…

IMG_7037.JPG

and iced tea….

IMG_7039.JPG

Then we got to check out the resort. We were told where everything was and made our Christmas dinner booking…

IMG_7042.JPG

before being taken to our family bure…

IMG_7045.JPG

Our bure

IMG_7052.JPG

which is just gorgeous…check out that ceiling…

and the detailed touches…

IMG_7050.JPG

which might just have come from the tree outside our bure…

IMG_7054.JPG

We have two bures with an interconnecting lounge area – perfect for two families. Nan & Pop have the bure with a king bed and sofa (but no bath in the bathroom). After getting settled and Kevin sorting out the internet (his main priority upon arrival) we headed off for some much needed dinner. We had missed lunch (only having cheese & crackers on the plane) and with the time zone difference of two hour it wasn’t quite as bad as it sounds, but we were all ready to eat :-). It was raining, so we grabbed our complimentary umbrellas and headed off. We got to meet (and pat) a gorgeous lizard from the local wildlife park upon our entrance to the buffet resturant.

IMG_7057.JPG

The place is beautifully decorated, with some subtle Christmas touches which I love. Yay, our first family dinner in Fiji!

First dinner - Mexican buffet

The theme changed here each night but as soon as we heard it was Mexican tonight my family was rather excited. Now, I could have started with the cold selection….

IMG_7063.JPG

but instead I headed straight to the Quesadilla bar πŸ™‚

IMG_7062.JPG

where a very friendly Fijian made me a delicious vegetarian quesadilla, which along with the rest of my meal was delicious. My second plate looked almost the same as the first :-).

IMG_7064.JPG

Kevin enjoyed with first cocktail of the week and Amy enjoyed her first mocktail.

IMG_7065.jpg IMG_7066.jpg

I barely had any room left for dessert but once I saw the selection I just had to give it a try.

Dessert buffet

It was all lovely but by far my favourite was the mango mousse – the blob at the front of my plate. Yummo!!!

IMG_7072.JPG

It was dusk when we left, after handshakes and farewells from the bar man, and the torches had been lit.

IMG_7073.JPG

The girls had left before us and were already in the pool, which they said was lovely.

IMG_7074.JPG

Evening swim

Kevin headed back to the room and Nan, Pop and I went to check out the general shop, and pick up some essetials, and replace Christy’s kids band which was ripped. When we got back I looked in our window!!!

IMG_7079.JPG

Our bure is very secluded and private and just magical at night with the lights on. I’m sure everyone will sleep well after such a long day. And tomorrow we’ll get to explore the resort some more and check out the beach.

Weekend in Canberra – Part 3

IMG_6664.JPG

Neither of us slept very well – lots of late night loud people leaving the hotel – so we had another lazy morning before packing up and leaving around 9am. First stop was the Old Bus Depot Markets.

IMG_6665.JPG

First up was breakfast.

IMG_6666.jpg

We ordered a vegetarian crepe to share but it was so huge we didn’t manage to finish it.

IMG_6668.jpg

After we explored and made just a few purchases we headed off again. This time into the countryside….

IMG_6671.JPG

to visit….

IMG_6674.JPG

Pretty awesome aren’t they?

IMG_6677.JPG

IMG_6678.jpg

We had an explore of the exhibits (but to be truthful there isn’t a lot here – esp. when you’ve been to the Kennedy Space Center) and then enjoyed morning tea outside.

IMG_6680.JPG IMG_6681.JPG

While we were there we were lucky enough to see it change position.

IMG_6682.jpg IMG_6687.jpg

Then we set off for home. I ended up driving for a bit as Kevin wasn’t feeling the best and was tired. We had a few false starts with lunch. We tried a cafe atΒ  a winery but couldn’t find it at all.

IMG_6690.JPG

Then we tried Grandma’s Bakery – but it was really a gourmet restaurant.

IMG_6692.JPG

Third time we were lucky – good old Subway.

IMG_6694.JPG

Then it was home sweet home, and back to the reality of bickering children and a messy house!!!

Such is life!

Weekend in Canberra – Part 2

We had a leisurely start as you do on holidays. We had some spaghetti on toast for breakfast then headed back into Canberra Central for more shopping.

IMG_6649.JPG IMG_6648.JPG

A highlight would have to be Crate and Barrel, which we don’t have anywhere nearby. Luckily really. Loved the little carts they had, not that I fitted in everything I bought. I left the store with 3 large bags – some presents, but most for me :-).

IMG_6647.JPG photo-1.JPG

Kevin actually got some things today – from the ABC shop and from a tea shop.

IMG_6646.jpg

Lunch today was from Sumo Salad.

IMG_6651.JPG

We went back to the apartment when my feet were too sore and we’d been to all the shops. We intended to have a bit of a relax but the cleaners turned up so we left again and headed out to Gold Creek. This part was all new since I’d last been here. Since we were early to meet Lisa, we checked out some more shops, and bought a few things for the girls.

IMG_6653.JPG

We met Lisa at Adore Teashop, where we chatted and enjoyed tea. I had scones with jam…and a bit of cream (not quite enough for 2 scones πŸ™ )

IMG_6654.JPG

and Lisa had this yummy looking cake – I tried a bit and it was nice.

IMG_6657.jpg

It was a brief catch up but lovely none-the-less. Lisa looks wonderful with her little baby bump (which you can’t really see in the photos) and so radiant.

IMG_6659.JPG

But she was very naughty and bought me a little Christmas gift – which I’m not allowed to open until Christmas :-(.

IMG_6661.JPG

After saying our goodbye we visited the shop and I scored a few more goodies, and bought some of the Devonshire Cream tea that I’d enjoyed.

IMG_6660.JPG

We headed back to the apartment where I spent the remainder of the evening catching up on youtube video (and I’m finally ALL caught up) as there were no worthwhile movies to watch. For dinner we had Pie Face which we’d bought earlier at the shops.

IMG_6662.JPG IMG_6663.JPG

I know we seem have done a lot of shopping, and eating, but we’ve definitely focused on shops and eating places that we don’t have at home or nearby :-).

Weekend in Canberra – Part 1

Kevin and I had such a lovely time Canberra last year for our Wedding Anniversary that we decided to do it again this year – celebrating 19 years of marriage.

We set off around 11am Friday, driving 2 cars up to Leanne’s home so we could drop off the car to them. We then set off for Canberra. First stop was Golburn where we had lunch at the bakery.

IMG_6621.JPG

It was definitely amongst the best veggie pies I’ve had :-).

IMG_6622.JPG

Then it was back on the road and past Lake George….

IMG_6623.JPG

and into Canberra….

IMG_6624.JPG

We found our apartments and got checked in.

IMG_6625.JPG IMG_6626.JPG

I had booked a one-bed apartment but we were given a 2 bed. The place is really nice and I’d definitely stay here again.

IMG_6627.JPG IMG_6628.JPG IMG_6629.JPG IMG_6634.JPG

We got settled, had a cup of tea and headed back out to do some shopping at the Canberra Center. Loved the car park with the light indicating available and unavailable car spaces. Kevin said lots of places have them but I’d never seen them before and thought it very clever.

IMG_6635.JPG

Then… let the shopping begin… if you’d like me show you what I got let me know and I’ll shoot a video when I get home.

IMG_6637.JPG IMG_6641.JPG IMG_6639.JPG IMG_6638.JPG

Kevin was a really good sport. When he got bored in a shop he’d just wait outside and listen to some music or play on his phone.

IMG_6640.JPG

A few hours later when my poor feet were beyond dead we headed to Wagamama’s for dinner (I was so excited when I found out there was one here).

IMG_6642.jpg

It was crowded and noisy (being 7.30pm on a Friday night) so we opted to get takeaway. Half an hour later back at our apartment we enjoyed this yummy dinner.

IMG_6643.JPG

Most importantly, it was just as good as I remembered.
